Holly Chubb – Charlotte Mason Narration Primer
Now you can be sure they understand with narration.
Do You Struggle With Implementing Narration?
Narration is a great tool for expressing the understanding of a lesson. It’s simple and low stress, and best of all children are primed to do it naturally.
That being said, as a homeschool parent, it’s not always so easy to implement the idea of narration. While it sounds great when you read about it, or hear other parents talk about it, sometimes just knowing where to get started is a battle.
What should a child narrate? Do they do narration for every lesson? How long should a narration be? Isn’t it repetitive or worse boring?
All of these are vailid concerns!
What Do You Get?
First of all you get a fantastic introduction to narration skills. A short but indepth 20 minute video gives you all the information you need to get started with narration.
This video lesson will set you and your child up for success in your homeschool journey. This primer is designed for busy family life. In this video I provide you with all the building blocks to create a solid narrating foundation. Your child not only shows that they understand their lessons, they understand that they own that knowledge.
In the video we talk about how to build skills with young children. If your starting narration with an older child we talk about the baby steps to take to help get started.
After that introduction we start discussing why narration is so much more than just retelling. We talk also about what the benefits of narration are for your child.
From there we talk about the different ways that narration can be done. Again it is so much more than: ‘Tell me what you just learned’. There are some many creative ways to narrate. We discuss those different methods and how they can help different styles of learners.
Last we discuss a Charlotte Mason style exam. We breakdown what Charlotte expected in her exams and you even get a printable exam example as a bonus!
Hi, I’m Holly
I’m a homeschool mom to three amazing kids. I run At Home With Holly and am the founder of (but no longer run) the Digital Homeschool Convention. I am a fan of iced coffee, nature walks and my backyard chickens. When I am not working on helping new homeschoolers, you could find me in my garden, reading or chasing after my kids at our local nature park.
When I first started homeschooling it was hard. I felt like my child couldn’t sit still, wouldn’t listen and I was frustrated all the time. Homeschooling seemed like the perfect fit for us and I couldn’t understand what I was doing wrong- until I found Charlotte Mason’s books!
The Charlotte Mason method of learning has transformed my homeschool. I am here to share all that I have learned along the way with you.
Is this for you?
I want to make sure you really need this primer before you hand over any money. If you answer yes to the following questions than this is the course for you!
I want to learn about narration but I just don’t have the time to sit down and read a book. I need a way to learn this, that works with my busy schedule.
My child always says they don’t remember the lesson when asked to narrate.
My child and I find that retelling a lesson is boring but we still hate the idea of tests.
I would like to know that my child understood a lesson, not just memorized answers.
I would like to engage with my child on a deeper level regarding their understanding of what they know.
Katie Hartwell
“Narration used to freak me out. I saw other mothers talk about it online in Charlotte Mason facebook groups, but I thought- HOW! They recommended books and I am just not able to spend that much time learning how to do narration. I have 2 kids a job and I homeschool. I don’t have time to pee some days!
This was a great break down. I was able to watch this after the kids were asleep. In one night I felt 100% more comfortable with the idea of narration. Thank you!”
Sarah Olson
“My kids hated narration. As soon as I was done with the lesson I would ask them to tell me what they learned. It was always the same “I don’t remember”. It drove me crazy! We had just finished the lesson two seconds ago, how could they not remember?
The way Holly broke it down, I was able to see that maybe it wasn’t that they didn’t remember, maybe retelling isn’t something they feel comfortable with. We tried some of the other methods of narration and that made a difference. Now I can tell they are listening. That’s a big relief.”

This was a great breakdown. It made total sense on how to build on narration skills with kids as young as toddlers. It was great to see we can start building skills before we start school. I am currently implementing what you taught with all my kids, not just the oldest who I bought this course because of.

I’m hear to tell you that narration is anything but boring. It can be silly, creative, thought provoking. It just depends on how you want to approach it. How you and your children do narration will be different than other families, but that’s ok!
This primer should make narration easier to understand and implement. If for some reason you are not 100% satisfied you have 30 days to get your money back. That gives you time to not only watch the video but to implement some of the strategies that we discuss. If at the end of those 30 days narration isn’t any easier for you and your child send me an email for a full refund.
What Age Child Is This Intended For?
This primer can be used if you have a new narrator as we discuss how to gently introduce narration to an older child. We also talk about the steps you can take with very young children to prime them to start narrating as soon as lessons start.
This course is suited for very young children who haven’t started lessons, or older children who have never narrated before. It is not for advanced narrators.
What If My Child Isn’t An Auditory Learner?
It might seem as though narration is best suited for auditory learners but narration can work for any style learner. In this primer I talk about how I engage my kinesthtic learner with narration. Visual learners can also participate in narration. There are many ways that a lesson can be narrated!
I’m A Busy Mom. I Buy Products I Never Use. Why Is This Different?
Oh boy do I hear that! You don’t want to waste time on a product you aren’t able to use. This primer is differnt because it is a short but intensive 20 minute video. It’s like going to a convention to hear a speaker talk about narration, but this speaker comes to your house on your schedule.
The only thing you have to do is make sure that you make time to actually watch the video. From there it’s just a matter of using what you’ve learned with your child.
