How to break all the publicity rules and get tons of coverage for your business

If you’d like to use publicity to substantially increase the sales of your products or services, I have some important advice for you:
Forget everything you’ve heard about the conventional approach to getting press coverage for your business. For the most part, you couldn’t find a greater waste of your time.
Here’s what I mean. There are dozens of books and probably hundreds of web sites offering to teach you how to run your own publicity campaigns. They promise to show you how to get coverage in newspapers, magazines, radio interviews, even television shows.
But here’s the unvarnished truth: while you may be successful at this (and you may not), you practically have to make learning about publicity and running your campaigns a second career. These are very time-consuming activities. And anyone who tells you they aren’t simply isn’t being honest with you.
Taking the struggle out of getting PR for your business
I don’t know about you, but I simply don’t have time to write press releases, bio sheets, articles, question and answer sheets and all the other tools you need to conduct a publicity campaign. Not to mention sending out my press releases, calling editors and reporters, and playing phone tag for weeks on end.
So a few weeks ago, I decided to take a contrarian approach to PR. I broke the cardinal rule of all the so-called do-it-yourself experts. I hired a publicist to write articles about my business and get them placed in the publications of my choice.
For years, I hesitated to do this because all the experts advised me that I’d have to pay $30,000 or more to have a good publicist create and run an effective campaign.
What a load of bull! Here’s what I was able to accomplish on a rather skimpy budget of just $2,000 — all within two weeks of hiring my publicist:
- The second largest daily newspaper in San Diego, my home town, ran a big article on the front page of the business section about me and my business.
- A leading government agency invited me to be on the advisory board of their innovation council. I’ll be sharing duties with senior executives from some of the biggest corporations in San Diego.
- I was booked for a 20 to 30-minute interview on a leading radio show for business executives. Normally, you have to be a CEO of a major corporation to be a guest on this show, but a simple technique got me booked in five minutes.
- I was asked to speak on innovation at an event for business, education, and government leaders from all of San Diego county. I’ll be sharing the podium with executives from some of the most successful companies in San Diego — many of them international corporations and Fortune 500s.
- My publicist was given a commitment from a prominent publication to run yet another article on my business. And we have a plan in place to leverage all this to get even more coverage in the national business magazines.
Look, I don’t want to keep beating the do-it-yourself experts while they’re down, but realistically, do you think you could come anywhere close to accomplishing this much on your own for just $2,000 – and with just three hours of your own time? I can guarantee you the answer is a flat out “no”.
