The man I respect the MOST in this business, Cecil Peoples called me to tell me the news.
Alex and I had our differances, but we would still cross a crowded room to greet one another. He was a true warrior in every sense. This is a GREAT tragedy. I am very sorry for Alex’s family and friends.R.I.P. Alex…

I just got this from Scott Coker (K-1 USA):
San Francisco’s TV CBS Channel 5 Reported: A road rage incident may have led to a deadly shooting South of Market in San Francisco during the Friday afternoon commute. Investigators say there was a minor traffic off 5th St. in the South of Market area, and that the victim of the homicide apparently chased the suspect’s car. Witnesses say the victim confronted the suspect at 5th and Clara. “It appears that it was a traffic accident dispute,” said Maria Oropeza of the San Francisco Police Department. “The victim chased the suspect, and upon contact, the suspect shot the victim.” A witness named Jason said, “He tried to confront the guy. We heard one pop, and he fell to the ground.” The suspect’s vehicle is described as a green or gray Jeep Cherokee with possibly a broken window. Southbound 5th St. was blocked off at Folsom, and there was another police blockade on Harrison. Traffic was moving in the area as of 6:30pm, but it was very slow.
Witnesses say after he shot Gong the driver sped away towards the Bay Bridge but not before several of Gong’s students caught the make of the car and his license plate number. The students tried to revive Gong who was actually in his gym working out at the time of the hit and run but were obviously not successful. Once informed, the Police shut down streets near the Bay Bridge but no word on whether the shooter has been caught yet.
“This is a sad day for martial arts.” Said Scott Coker, (L) who was responsible for much of Gong’s publicized success as a fighter on the StrikeForce Events in San Jose, California shown on ESPN Worldwide. “He did so many great things for MuayThai and the martial arts community, keeping MuayThai alive in America through his spirit and his gym.”

Very sad to see this. Takes a lot of courage to go confront someone. Takes NO courage to pull a trigger!!!Damn, don’t know what to say so I won’t say anything more.Well, I will say that ANY PUSSY CAN PULL A TRIGGER!!
I’m very sorry for his family and his friends.

I don’t know why God permits so damn much suffering on this earth.
But I still believe what I was taught at as child.(paraphrased:“I am he resurection and the life, if any man believe in me, even though he dies, yet shall he live,”So, I know Alex is at perfect peace. I Pray that God will comfort
his family.
For the rest of us who yet remain, I will say that whoever it was on this
board that said the following, said something very profound, that
has obvious implications, applications and morals that go far, far, far,
beyond this tragic incident:
“Takes NO courage to pull a trigger!!!
Well, I will say that ANY PUSSY CAN PULL A TRIGGER!! “
Yep, truer words were never spoken.

Alex Gong was the kind of guy who would talk your ear off about muay thai for an hour…but it was all such good stuff that you’d want him to keep going! He had just come back from Vegas and was in great spirits and his body was healthy. The night before he held the monthly Smoker competitions, and ref’d all the fights. He put a lot of love into that gym.
I just really can’t believe it.

in the ring with me at K-1: Alex Gong(left), myself, Ole Laursen(right)i heard the news from Scott Coker the other day and was shocked. then in denial. i woke up early, early this morning and woke up very sad because the first thing that was on my mind was Alex. at a loss for words.Muay Thai could not have been where it is now, if it wasn’t for Alex. He was our Embassador for America.
Rest in Peace my friend, God be with you.

First I heard about Alex was in Black belt magazine. From another country looking into America he was the most famous Muay Thai fighter in America and the man I wanted to fight to make my name there.Last year I went on a road trip with Angela and a few people from Master Toddys for a smoker tournament held at the Fairtex gym in San Francisco. I got to meet Alex and he seemed like a nice guy. In between fights he got up on the ring and tried to explain to the crowd how to cheer for you favorite fighter as they land a shot just like in Thailand. You could see in his eyes just how much he loved the sport and he wanted other people to enjoy it as much as he did.Not only was he a world champion but he did what only a hand few of Westerners could ever dream of. Not only did he have the most famous gym in the country but he also had some of the best Thai’s in Thailand working along side him. He carried the Fairtex name with pride and did what ever he could to promote it.
Even though I never knew Alex and only got to meet him the once I do understand in what he believed in. He lived for his gym and to promote the sport of Muay Thai. This is a very sad day for the sport and America has had a great loss.
RIP Alex Gong

I first met Alex in 1995 in Fairtex, Arizona. We roomed together, trained together, hung out in the off time. When Arizona ended, Alex told me of his plans to hopefully try to get Fairtex started again in San Francisco. I was going to move to Los Angeles, Alex asked if I had wanted to be a part of the San Francisco gym. Of course I did, so he told me to hang tight, as things would come together soon.
Eventually, he got started-the first San Francisco Fairtex was ran out of a restaurant/club named “Big Heart City”. Alex had me come up for a few weeks while he left to go to Ireland( to corner Jean Claude Leuyer). I stayed at his apartment on California St. with Ganyao, head trainer from Fairtex. Alex took me to the Presidio(an old army base) one day and told me of his plans, how he wanted to turn Fairtex into a big, well known name-a name synomonous with Champions….he told me of his own desire to be a world champion. His sincerity and drive and desire was undeniable.
I returned to L.A. for a few months, untill things were ready. Alex contacted me again-he had the Clementina St. gym ready and wanted me to come up. I did. For a week-but I couldn’t stay-Things had changed for me, and staying in SF just wasn’t possible.

we stayed in touch, then gradually, over time, it became harder. You get busy with life and such, and you don’t always make the time to keep in touch with people. The phone calls become shorter and farther apart……The last time I saw Alex was 2 years ago. I was fighting here in L.A. on one of the “Warriors Cup” shows. I lost a decision to Duane Ludwig, and of course theres no shame in losing, especially to a guy as talented and nice as Duane. Nonetheless, I was feeling a bit down. Who do I see? Alex Gong. He comes over gives me a hug, and tells me it was good to see me, told me how he was cheering for me, asked about work-all the things you ask a friend about. We chatted for a bit, then Alex said he had to run. His flight was boarding in just a few minutes-but he had wanted to stay and see me fight, and talk to me afterwards. As he was leaving he asked me something-basically it was an old inside joke we and a few others had shared years before in Arizona. We laughed a bit, and that was the last time I saw him face to face.
We talked a few more times since then, and every now and then, I’d have someone show up at my school and tell me that Alex had recommended them to me, which I always felt especially good about, not only that he thought enough of me, skill wise, to send people my way, but that I was still being thought of.
