Susan Harrison-Tustain’s Painting Watercolor My Way
Part (Disc) 1: Susan’s welcome and introduction lead into her selection of the rose for the still-life that is her subject for this video, then we see an animation of the painting as it comes to life through each stage. Susan provides full details of the materials she has carefully chosen to be the best for the techniques she uses and the results she wishes to create. She introduces the exciting Susan Harrison-Tustain Signature Brushes Set from da Vinci and Colors Set from Schmincke. She demonstrates how she stretches her paper and then it’s into the fun part – applying the colors. First the yellow underwashes using her priming method , then the fine veils of transparent color that allow her paintings to glow . Look over her shoulder as she explains in full detail everything she is doing and why. See the color mixes she uses and how she can create virtually any color from her limited palette. A new feature are the short ’Garden Breaks’ where Susan gives you a chance to pause between each painting stage as she highlights the beauty of a particular flower or fruit in her garden.
Part (Disc) 2: Susan continues to bring her painting to life. She retains the white background until near the end. Many artists have asked her about painting white on white and the decorated white porcelain bowl provides an excellent example of this. She discusses backgrounds and the different options for this painting, then shows each stage of building up a background incorporating the colors and wood-grain elements of her reference photograph. Fine-tuning is the important final stage, when all the components of the painting are integrated to form a polished and satisfying whole. Then enjoy a Gallery of Susan s work in both watercolor and oil, with fine detail highlighted and each painting shown unframed, then framed. Finally, the Footnotes section provides you with useful and practical information. Susan hopes you will gain much enjoyment, insight and inspiration from this video. Adapt her techniques to your own artistic expression, so that you can convey in your paintings your own vision and creative impulse. Happy Painting!
About Susan:
New Zealand artist Susan Harrison-Tustain is acclaimed internationally. She was encouraged to paint at an early age and was particularly inspired by the rich depth of colour and evocative lighting captured by Rembrandt. Initially Susan painted in oils, but after her switch to watercolours her career as a professional artist really began. Mostly self-taught, she absorbed information about watercolour from any and every source and combined what she learned with her own innate abilities. Without the constraints imposed by formal training she developed her own skill and techniques, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved by watercolour. Her intent has always been to retain the delicacy of watercolours, but she also builds up multiple layers of fine washes to provide richness and depth when appropriate.
Susan’s choice of subjects and the naturalistic realism of her painting style reflect a belief in the power of beauty to enrich our lives and enhance our positive emotional responses. She wants viewers of her art works to be uplifted and seeks to achieve this by highlighting such delights as the lusciousness of a newly opened rose, the relaxing and re-energising power of a walk by the ocean or the mellowing and calming effect of time-worn books.
Her book ’Glorious Garden Flowers in Watercolor’ (North Light Books, Cincinnati) has been a best seller of its type, published in both hard and soft cover and a Chinese language version. You will also find her work in ’Splash 6’, ’Splash 7’ and ’Splash 8’ (North Light Books). Susan’s work has been on several prestigious magazine covers and within the pages of many publications, including the books ’New Zealands Favourite Artists’, ’New Zealand in Watercolour’ and ’The Power of Us New Zealanders Who Dare to Dream’. She has featured twice on television. She conducts workshops in the USA, Australia, Europe and New Zealand. Her exhibitions attract a great deal of attention from within New Zealand and from overseas and she achieves prices for her work which are rare for a living artist.
