Angela Lim, Sandra Skates – The Fascial Distortion Model: A Different Approach to Fascia
Description
The Fascial Distortion Model (FDM) was conceived by Stephen Typaldos, DO. He treated the first triggerband in 1991 in Yuba City. There began a journey of developing a new system of evaluating and treating the fascia. Today, the FDM is practiced around the world in countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe by practitioners that are DOs, MDs, PTs, chiropractors, athletic trainers, and the like. As with any new model and techniques, it has been met with skepticism. However with understanding, proper use and application, the FDM is a highly effective tool to help patients. The six fascial distortions will be defined and how the FDM applies to established OMT techniques will be reviewed. Specific fascial distortion techniques will be described. Patient cases demonstrating the utilization of the FDM and its techniques will be presented. The future of the FDM is promising in the hands of DOs and deserves to be integrated into osteopathic schools.
Learning Objectives:
1. To learn what the FDM is
2. Be able to define the six distortions
3. Be able to recognize hand gestures indicating each of the six distortions
4. Be able to recognize some language associated with each of the six distortions
